Academic Interventions to Help Students Meet Rigorous Standards: State Policy Options

The National High School Alliance announced the release of a new report, Academic Interventions to Help Students Meeting Rigorous Standards. The report is intended to inform the design of state policies and programs to help at-risk students succeed as they face challenging, college-preparatory curricula and increased graduation requirements.

Policy Brief: Federal Policy Positions of National High School Alliance Partners

The National High School Alliance announced the release of a new policy brief, Federal Policy Positions of National High School Alliance Partners. The brief examines the federal policy positions of HS Alliance partner organizations, representing multiple stakeholder and constituent groups. It provides a summary of the common themes and differences in partner organizations’ positions on the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and a short summary of partners’ statements on other federal legislation.

MetLife Task Force on Teacher Leadership in High Schools Announced

MetLife Foundation has provided funding to the Institute for Educational Leadership (IEL) to identify and disseminate information about where teacher leadership is expected, practiced and supported by principals, superintendents, and school board members. The MetLife Task Force on Teacher Leadership in High Schools is focused on answering the question, “How will we lead America’s high schools?”

HS Alliance Director To Serve on Expert Panel on High School Improvement

Naomi G. Housman, Director of the National High School Alliance, will serve on the Friends of the National High School Center Working Group, a distinguished panel of award-winning practitioners, distinguished researchers, and senior staff from national education organizations and foundations, convened to share best practices on pressing issues in high school improvement. The working group will provide guidance and direction as the the National High School Center offers high school-related assistance to the Regional Comprehensive Centers of the U.S. Department of Education.

Call to Action

On April 11, 2005, the National High School Alliance announced the official release of A Call to Action: Transforming High School for All Youth, a framework of six core principles and recommended strategies for preparing all of our nation's youth for college, careers, and active civic participation. A Call To Action provides leaders at the national, state, district, school, and community levels with a common framework for building public will, developing supportive policies, and actually implementing the practices needed to radically change the traditional, factory-model high school that tracks and sorts students.

A Call to Action is the result of the National High School Alliance's work over the past two years to tap the expertise of its diverse partnership of 40+ national organizations to identify what it takes to produce high academic achievement, close the achievement gap, and promote civic and personal growth among all high-school-age youth.

Developed by an informal consortium of career academy organizations, the Career Academy National Standards of Practice, are framed around ten key elements of successful implementation, drawn from many years of research and experience from all parts of the country.

Crisis or Possibility: Conversations About the American High School

Students from a range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds are disengaging from and/or dropping out of high school each day. This new report from the National High School Alliance looks at how leaders are beginning to transform America's traditional, comprehensive high school in ways that make it responsive to the needs of all students. Based on proceedings from a series of conferences in the fall of 2003, the report identifies seven "key levers for change," and exposes the gaps and challenges that remain.

Recipient of Gates and Kellogg Foundations Grants

The National High School Alliance was the recent recipient of three-year funding totaling $501,383 from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The HS Alliance will continue to be housed and staffed by the Institute for Educational Leadership. With this new support, the HS Alliance will advance its mission to foster high achievement, close the achievement gap, and promote civic and personal growth among high school-aged youth.

All Over the Map: State Policies to Improve the High School
This report examines trends, policy assumptions and tensions that key state education statutes and board requirements hold for high schools. The state policies considered are divided into three categories:

  • policies specific to high schools, such as compulsory schooling, Carnegie Units and curriculum,
  • General Education Development - GED policies that detail opportunities to learn, such as teacher certification and student retention/promotion, and
  • alternative schools policies that are new and in rapid flux, such as standards and accountability, assessment and high school exit tests.
